Fitchburg Assault Suspect Released

FITCHBURG -- A 19-year-old Fitchburg man who allegedly assaulted two people and slashed the tires on one of their cars Sunday was released after a Friday dangerousness hearing.
Omar Riaz, of 24 Ethier St. was released on the condition that he stay away from the alleged victims, have no contact with them, and submit to GPS monitoring. His bail was also set at $1,000 cash or $10,000 surety.
One of the alleged victims, a woman, told police she and a man were sitting in her car parked at 211 Bemis Road Sunday when a man wearing a ski mask and black clothing opened the car door and began to strike the man in the car, according to court records.
The male victim yelled that he was stabbed and the woman ran out of the car to pull Riaz off of the man, court records say. She told police she recognized Riaz from his voice.
Riaz allegedly cursed at the woman while punching her in the face, according to court documents.
He then slashed all four of the car’s tires and fled, court records say.
The woman told police that she and Riaz previously dated and broke up the day of the alleged incident.
Riaz was charged with assault and battery on a family or household member, assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for allegedly slashing the male victim, mayhem for inflicting a serious injury to the man’s face, and vandalizing property.
