Earthquakes Top Rampage in Shootout
MILWAUKEE (AP) _ The San Jose Earthquakes advanced in the U.S. Open Cup by edging the Milwaukee Rampage 7-6 in a penalty kick shootout following a 0-0 tie.
The Earthquakes, of Major League Soccer, won when Scott Bower, their eighth shooter, put home the winning penalty kick past goalie Dan Popik. That moved San Jose into the quarterfinals of the nationwide tournament.
Milwaukee, of the A-League, led the shootout 3-2 when San Jose goalie Jon Conway made a diving stop on Khary Stockton. Conway made another sensational save on Dennis Fadeski just before Bower won it.
``On the first three kickers, I could not get a good read,″ Conway said. ``But after that I felt a lot more comfortable. I got a pretty good jump on the fourth kicker, and on the last kicker. I felt confident we were going to pull this game out.″
