The Citizens’ Voice, Community Stands Up Against Bigotry

March 16, 2019

Editor: In an important editorial — “ACT for America betrays American values” (March 10) — The Citizens’ Voice sends a clear and unequivocal message that ACT for America’s anti-Muslim bigotry is not welcome in the Wilkes-Barre area. Some may not realize that ACT for America — which is infamous for promoting baseless and offensive conspiracy theories, distributing hateful anti-Muslim propaganda and engaging in fear-mongering about Islam — has also been making a concerted effort to inject its extreme views into the mainstream for quite some time. The organization deliberately and deceitfully cloaks its anti-Muslim agenda in the language of patriotism. While claiming to defend American values, in reality ACT for America undermines the civil liberties enshrined in the Constitution. This is why it is so crucial for Americans to oppose ACT for America’s efforts to institutionalize Islamophobia. In this case, faith leaders, civic leaders and community leaders came together to send a clear message: that the Wilkes-Barre area welcomes Muslims and all Americans. The Citizens’ Voice editorial magnified that message to the entire community. In these challenging times when hate is on the rise, The Citizens’ Voice and the people of Wilkes-Barre can be proud to say they stood up against the rising tide of bigotry and had an impact.
