Judge finds man guilty of aggravated battery
KANKAKEE — Thomas L. Dexter was found guilty of aggravated battery after a bench trial in Kankakee County court on Monday.
Judge Clark Erickson ruled that “the injuries suffered by the victim rose to the level of ‘great bodily harm’ and rejected Dexter’s claim of self-defense,” according to State’s Attorney Jim Rowe.
The 24-year-old Dexter and the victim each admitted the fight stemmed from a dispute on a social media app.
The victim testified he suffered permanent nerve damage and serious injuries to his head and face. The victim was home on leave from the U.S. Air Force at the time of the incident.
The fight occurred in Bourbonnais in July 2018.
Dexter will be sentenced at a later date. The sentencing range is probation to a prison sentence of two to five years.
