Italy probes deportation of Kazakhstan family
ROME (AP) — Italy’s premier says Italian authorities are investigating the deportation of the wife and 6-year-old daughter of an exiled businessman who is a foe of Kazakhstan’s government.
Premier Enrico Letta told Italian lawmakers Wednesday that there is an investigation into the raid on the Rome house Mukhtar Ablyazov’s wife and child.
The two, who had been in Italy since September 2012, were deported to Kazakhstan in late May on the grounds that the mother carried an allegedly forged passport. Letta called the investigation “delicate” and gave no details.
Ablyazov is widely said to have funded opposition parties and media. He is wanted by Kazakhstan authorities on charges of siphoning off billions of dollars from BTA bank, based in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He has denied wrongdoing and called the allegations politically motivated.
