NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Essex County College is on probation.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education on Monday found the school is out of compliance because of ongoing troubles with finance and leadership. The college has a year to fix the problems before it could risk losing accreditation.

Students would no longer be eligible for federal financial aid if accreditation is revoked.

College President Anthony Munroe told NJ.com the school remains "resolved and resolute" to address every compliance matter.

Essex County College serves more than 10,000 students.
