Woman killed after being struck by passenger train
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Police in North Carolina say a woman was hit and killed by an Amtrak passenger trains as she crossed the tracks.
Durham police said in a news release 50-year-old Judy Estrada was walking across the tracks around 7:15 a.m. Thursday when she was hit by the westbound train. Estrada was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one on the train was hurt.
Investigators said the warning arms had come down and all safety mechanisms were working when the collision occurred. According to police, the engineer hit the brakes and blew the locomotive horn, but was unable to stop in time.
Police are investigating the incident.
