Birmingham 41, Orlando 17

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ Cliff Stoudt, hitting on 15 of 21 passes for 213 yards, threw three touchdown tosses, two to Jim Smith, as Birmingham defeated Orlando 41-17 Monday night and moved farther ahead in the USFL’s Eastern Division.

Birmingham, 10-4, is a full game ahead of New Jersey and Tampa Bay, tied at 9-5 in the conference. Orlando fell to 3-11.

Stoudt hit Smith on scoring tosses of 13 and seven yards and Joey Jones on a 50-yarder. In addition, Stoudt and Smith combined on a run-lateral for a 32- yard scoring play.

Paul Ott Carruth ran six yards for another Stallions score and Danny Miller kicked field goals of 33 and 24 yards.

Orlando scored first after recovering a Stoudt fumble at the Birmingham 21. Four plays later, Leon Perry scored from the 4.

Birmingham jumped to a 31-7 lead before Orlando scored on a 37-yard pass from Reggie Collier to Joey Walters late in the first half.

Orlando’s other points came on a 34-yard field goal by Jeff Brockhaus in the third period.

Interceptions by Mickey Sutton and Chuck Clanton, who leads the league with 14, set up two Birmingham scores. Sutton returned his interception 32 yards and Clanton got 29 yards after his steal.

Smith’s scoring catches increased his league lead to 15. He caught five passes for 62 yards and Jones got six for 119.

Birmingham, led by Carruth’s 95 yards and Joe Cribbs’ 67 yards, piled up 244 yards on the ground. Stoudt and Bob Lane combined for 247 yards passing.

The attendance was announced at 24,500.
