Lens on History: Bakery rose on hotel’s ground floor
Opened in 1926, Federal Bakery was on the ground floor of the Central Hotel at the corner of Second Street and South Broadway. Imagine the hotel guests waking up to the smell of fresh baked bread every morning.
Special occasions called for something special, and that something special might just have been a cake from the Federal Bakery. Like any other bakery, Federal made bread, rolls and pastries, but it was known for its decorated cakes.
Celebrating a child’s birthday? How about a cake decorated like a fire truck? Needing an anniversary cake that looked like two entwined rings? Not a problem. But where Federal’s manager and cake boss Ira Fellows really shined was the creation of multi-level wedding cakes with charms baked inside.
Many a cake from Federal was the centerpiece of a wedding and sat in a place of honor.
