Two French Air Force Officers Missing Along Kuwait-Iraq Border
PARIS (AP) _ Two French military advisers assisting the Kuwaiti air force have disappeared along the emirate’s border with Iraq, officials said today.
The Defense Ministry said there had been no word about the two airmen since Tuesday, when they left Kuwait City in a civilian car for an unspecified destination.
They were identified as Chief Warrant Officer Jean-Claude Laemle, 42, and Warrant Officer Jean-Yves Sanchis, 37, who were assigned as technical assistants to Kuwait’s air force.
The Defense Ministry said searchers had found no traces of the men or their car on the Kuwaiti side of the border, leading to speculation they may have crossed into Iraq. The ministry said inquiries were being made in Baghdad.
In Kuwait, a French diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the two men ″are most probably in Iraq.″ In July, an American and a British businessman disappeared after straying over the border into Iraq. They were missing about a week, questioned in Safwan and brought back to Kuwait on July 22.
