October 10, 2018

A Roseburg woman was killed during a crash on Interstate 5 Saturday night near milepost 170, Cottage Grove.

A 71-year-old Roseburg woman was killed Saturday night during a crash on Interstate 5 that shut down the southbound lanes just south of Cottage Grove for several hours.

Seth Kamel, 30, of Oakland, was driving south on the freeway in a 2001 Buick Le Sabre when he drifted into the median for unknown reasons and hit the guard rail near milepost 170, according to Oregon State Police.

His passenger, Linda Cole, of Roseburg, was killed in the crash. Authorities pronounced her dead on the scene.

Kamel sustained only minor injuries and was transported to a hospital, according to police.

Both southbound lanes of the freeway were closed and travelers were detoured via the Sixth Street off-ramp to London Road while police investigated the crash and crews cleared the road, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Both lanes were reopened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

The investigation is ongoing.
