February 8, 2019

SOCASTEE, S.C. (AP) — Police in South Carolina say a man who led officers on a chase was shot and wounded by an officer.

Horry County police said the shooting happened shortly after 1 a.m. Friday in Socastee, about 8 miles (13 kilometers) west of Myrtle Beach.

It’s not clear why officers were chasing the man.

Police spokeswoman Mikayla Moskov told news outlets three officers and the suspect went to a hospital. Moskov said none of the officers had been shot.

The suspect was expected to survive.

The chase lasted about half an hour and ended after he drove over police spikes to deflate his tires.

State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said the officers and suspect are white men. Their names have not been released. SLED is investigating the shooting.
