Rand Paul: Let’s hold the State of the Union in the Senate

January 17, 2019

GOP Sen. Rand Paul suggested Thursday that President Trump give the State of the Union address in the Senate.

On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked the president in a letter to reschedule the event or forego speaking all together by submitting the address in writing. She argued that since the Department of Homeland Security isn’t funded during the shutdown, it would be dangerous to hold the speech while secret service agents remain unpaid.

“I think that’s a real affront to the American people,” Mr. Paul said on Fox News, echoing similar sentiments from his Republican colleagues.

“Senator McConnell is in charge of the Senate, let’s host it in the Senate,” the Kentucky senator added.

DHS Secretary Kristjen Nielsen said the department is prepared, despite Mrs. Pelosi’s concern.

Mr. Trump has not responded to Mrs. Pelosi’s letter.
