The New Hampshire attorney general is alleging that a 53-year-old man stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from his mother.

Republican Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald says that Jerry Newton of Hillsborough has been indicted on four counts of financial exploitation of an elderly, disabled or impaired adult.

Efforts to reach Newton on Sunday were unsuccessful.

The indictments allege that Newton used his power of attorney to steal roughly $328,000 from his mother from Sept. 2015 through August.

The attorney general says that money should have been used for her sole benefit.

The maximum penalty for each indictment is 7 ½ to 15 years in New Hampshire State Prison and a possible fine of $4,000.
