Former Wayne County football stars are excelling in college

Several former high school football standouts from Wayne County played in the college ranks last season.

From Spring Valley’s Elijah Wellman at West Virginia University earning a tryout with the NFL’s Washington Redskins to players at the small-school level, former area standouts performed well on college fields in 2017. Here’s a look at some of them:

n Tyler Brown, Spring Valley, Marshall University football.

A 6-foot-2, 223-pound red-shirt sophomore, Brown played in five games, including the New Mexico Bowl victory over Colorado State, with the Thundering Herd last season.

n Mason Brubeck, Spring Valley, West Virginia Wesleyan football.

A 6-foot-1, 205-pound freshman wide receiver, Brubeck rushed three times for minus-1 yards and made three tackles. He is undecided on a major.

n Kaleb Hardin, Spring Valley, University of Charleston football.

A 6-foot-3, 270-pound offensive lineman, Hardin was redshirted last season with the Golden Eagles.

n Skylar Larcart, Spring Valley, University of Charleston football.

A 6-foot-2, 230-pound freshman defensive lineman, Larcart was redshirted last season with the Golden Eagles.

n Alex Locklear, Spring Valley, Marshall University football.

The 6-foot-5, 320-pound red-shirt sophomore played in 12 of the Thundering Herd’s 13 games, including a victory over Colorado State in the New Mexico Bowl, last season.

n Ethan Perry, Wayne, West Virginia State football.

A 6-foot-2, 299-pound true freshman, Perry was redshirted last season.

n Luke Presley, Tolsia, West Virginia State football.

A 5-foot-7, 200-pound freshman, Presley was redshirted last season with the Yellow Jackets.

n Elijah Wellman, Spring Valley, West Virginia University.

A 6-foot-2, 241-pound senior tight end/fullback, Wellman played in all 13 games for the Mountaineers last season. Wellman carried five times for 16 yards and caught five passes for 36 yards. In his career, Wellman played in 44 games and rushed for 121 yards and one touchdown on 30 attempts. He caught 13 passes for 57 yards and three touchdowns. Wellman is majoring in agribusiness management and rural development.

n Jonah Wellman, Spring Valley, West Virginia Wesleyan football.

A 6-foot-2, 225-pound freshman running back, Wellman played in four games last season for the Bobcats. He is undecided on a major.
