MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ Third-string quarterback Steve Bono fired a 12-yard touchdown pass to running back Allen Rice with 56 seconds to play Saturday night, rallying the Minnesota Vikings to a 29-27 preseason victory over the Denver Broncos.

After Sammy Winder’s 9-yard touchdown run gave Denver a 27-15 lead with 5:51 to play, Bono replaced Wade Wilson. He completed two passes before a 60- yard scoring run by Vince Evans on a fourth-and-1 play pulled the Vikings within 27-22 with 3:51 remaining.

After Denver failed to move the ball, Bono completed a 17-yard fourth-and- 10 pass to Jim Gustafson to set up the winning score.

Issiac Holt’s interception clinched the victory for the Vikings, 2-0 in the preseason.

Denver, 0-2, used John Elway touchdown passes of 31 yards to Clint Sampson and 24 yards to Butch Johnson and field goals of 41 yards by Michael Clendenen and 21 yards by Rich Karlis to take a 20-13 halftime lead.

The Vikings took a 7-0 lead on the opening kickoff when Denver’s Gene Lang bobbled the ball on his return and Minnesota’s Jesse Soloman picked off the airborne fumble and rambled 39 yards for a touchdown. Minnesota also scored in the first half on field goals of 30 yards by Jeff Brockhaus and 44 yards by Chuck Nelson.

Minnesota’s other two points came on a third-quarter safety when Rufus Bess blocked Jack Weil’s punt out of the end zone.
