Police: 9-year-old girl shot while playing in yard
WASHINGTON (AP) — Police in the nation’s capital say a 9-year-old girl has been wounded by gunfire.
D.C. police Commander William Fitzgerald tells The Washington Post it’s particularly upsetting that a young child playing in front of her house would get shot. He says the girl’s wounds aren’t life-threatening.
Police say they found several shell casings near the site where the girl was shot Friday evening.
The circumstances are unclear, and the commander doesn’t believe the girl was the intended target. But he’s rejecting the idea that she was hit by a stray bullet. He says “when you shoot a gun, it’s going to end somewhere.”
