Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh has ties to Texas

July 10, 2018

AUSTIN — U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and his wife, Ashley, have deep ties to Texas, where they married in Georgetown in 2004 with then-president George W. Bush in attendance, according to reports on the occasion.

Secret service agents posted outside the venue, Christ Church, and helped ensure guests were seated well ahead of schedule, the wedding planner cheekily told The Washingtonian.

“It was the only wedding in the hundreds I have planned where all of the guests were in their seats 15 minutes early,” the wedding planner told the magazine. “There’s no lollygagging when Secret Service are holding machine guns outside of the church.”

Both Brett and Ashley Kavanaugh, a Texan who graduated from Abilene Cooper Public High School, have long histories with the Bush family.

After attending the University of Texas at Austin, Ashley Kavanaugh began working for Bush in 1996 when he was governor, according to her LinkedIn page. She then joined Bush’s successful campaign for president before becoming Bush’s personal secretary once he moved into the White House.

Brett Kavanaugh similarly worked on the Bush-Cheney campaign, including during the pivotal Florida recount which landed at the U.S. Supreme Court in 2000. He then went on to work for the Bush administration for several years before being appointed to the federal bench.

The couple met in 2001 while both were working for Bush, a moment Kavanaugh described in a speech Monday after Trump nominated him.

“Our first date was on September 10, 2001. The next morning I was a few steps behind her as the Secret Service shouted at all of us to sprint out the front gates of the White House, because there was an inbound plane,” he said. “In the difficult weeks that followed, Ashley was a source of strength for President Bush, and for everyone in this building. Through bad days and so many better days since then, she has been a great wife and inspiring mom. I thank God every day for my family.”

Ashley Kavanaugh is now town manager in Chevy Chase, a Maryland suburb of Washington D.C. where the couple lives.
