Christopher Cross: ‘Sailing’ into Foxwoods with ‘Take Me As I Am’ tour

February 20, 2019

Ride Like the Wind,” “Sailing” and “Arthur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do)” are among the tunes you’ll hear when Christopher Cross performs at Foxwoods Resort Casino on March 7.

The guitarist/singer-songwriter’s self-titled debut album earned him five Grammy Awards in 1980, including Record of the Year, for “Sailing,” and Best New Artist. “Sailing,” the single, is about his memories of sailing every summer with a friend in Texas.

He’s also known for ballads such as “Think of Laura.” His website discusses the inspiration for it, explaining she was the best friend of a young woman Cross was dating at the time, in the early ’80s. She was killed by a stray bullet while driving in a car one night and the song was written in remembrance of her.

Aside from older fan favorites, Cross will perform newer songs, such as tunes from his 2017 album, “Take Me As I Am,” which includes “Roberta,” dedicated to Cross’ mentor, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. (Her given name is Roberta Joan.)

Among its lyrics: “She is the sun / She is the seed and water / She’s the shaman / Don Juan’s reckless daughter / The gift of purpose / A path to call my own / All these gifts / From my muse / Roberta, Roberta.”

“Take Me As I Am” is a hybrid of sorts — including instrumental songs with choruses to create a lyrical landscape. “Truth,” another special tune on it, includes contributions from Rob Meurer, who was Cross’ longtime friend and musical collaborator. It was one of the last songs he wrote before his tragic passing in 2016, when he was killed by a hit-and-run driver.
