Redskins meet with Kyler Murray at NFL scouting combine

March 1, 2019

INDIANAPOLIS The Washington Redskins have met with quarterback Kyler Murray at the NFL scouting combine, team President Bruce Allen said Friday.

Teams are allowed to meet formally with prospects for a 15-minute interview. Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Thursday he’ll normally have the player review five plays from a 25- to 30-play tape to test their football knowledge.

The Redskins have the 15th pick in this year’s draft and have an obvious need at quarterback with Alex Smith out with a leg injury. Murray, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, is regarded as one of the best passers in this year’s draft.

Allen revealed the meeting after being asked a general question about Murray’s size. The 21-year-old measured Thursday at 5 feet 10⅛ inches and 207 pounds.

“He played well,” Allen said. “He’s got this really cool trophy to prove that he played well. He didn’t bring it to our meeting the other day, but he’s very confident in what he can do. And ironically, it comes from the quarterback before him [Baker Mayfield], came in and they thought he was too short at 6- foot. So he’s confident in what he can do.”

Gruden also spoke highly of Murray with reporters. The Redskins coach said he did not think Murray’s size was as big of a deal as it would have been a few years ago.

“When you watch Kyler play on tape, I don’t think there’s any concern about his height,” Gruden said. “He can make every throw from in the pocket, outside the pocket. He’s going to run extremely fast. He’s probably 4.3, 4.4 [40-yard dash] guy.”

Allen said the Redskins plan on meeting with every top quarterback while at the combine.
