Kegler’s Korner: CHS at State Bowling
On Saturday, Dec. 8, the Columbus boys and girls Varsity teams competed at Hollywood Lanes in Lincoln for the Class A State Federation title.
Eight teams bowled four games of qualifying in order to seed the teams one through eight. After the teams were seeded, the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds were held.
Each round is a best of five of baker games. Bakers is where each bowler rolls two frames. The leadoff rolls frames one and six, second rolls two and seven, third three and eight, fourth four and nine and the anchor bowls five and 10.
In the Girls bracket, Columbus qualified first with a team score of 3225.
Individual scores were as follows: Stephanie Hoenk 630, Alex Holdsworth 691, Zoi Goebel 588, Madison Henderson 647 and Logan Schilling 669. Holdsworth earned First Team All-State honors with her 525 series.
The first three games bowled are used to determine award winners
The quarterfinals set up Columbus meeting No. 8 Lincoln Southwest.
Columbus defeated Southwest 3-1, (159-122, 163-117, 130-154, 155-100). In other quarterfinal matches, No. 5 Lincoln High defeated No. 4 Lincoln East 3-0, No. 3 Fremont defeated No. 6 Scottsbluff/Gering 3-2 and No. 2 Grand Island defeated No. 7 Lexington 3-2.
In the semifinals Columbus met Lincoln High. The Links ended the Discoverers’ hopes for a state title 3-1, (128-132, 122-121, 142-130, 149-133). In the other semifinal, Grand Island defeated Fremont 3-0.
Lincoln High went on to defeat Grand Island in the finals on Sunday.
In the boys bracket, Columbus qualified seventh with a team score of 3302.
Individual scores were as follows: Andrew Beck 637, Hunter Gassmann 604, Joseph McFarland 657, Kaedyn Stary 742 and Carstin Olson 662.
Stary earned First Team All-State with his 602 series. Like girls, the first three games bowled are used to determine 1st Team All-State.
In the quarterfinals, No. 7 Columbus faced No. 2 Scottsbluff/Gering. Columbus earned a 3-2 win, 154-152, 144-194, 171-182, 206-146, 166-138). In other quarterfinal matches, No. 1 Lincoln Northeast defeated No. 8 Lincoln Southeast 3-0, No. 5 Hastings defeated No. 4 Lincoln North Star 3-1 and No. 3 Fremont defeated No. 6 Norfolk 3-1.
In the semifinals Columbus again came up just short, this time to Fremont 3-1 (179-234, 227-145, 188-167, 202-137). In the other semifinal, Lincoln Northeast def. Hastings 3-2. Fremont defeated Lincoln Northeast the following day in the finals.
Congratulations to both the boys and girls bowling team on a successful season. The girls lose Schilling to graduation, while all the boys return next year.

Boulevard Lanes weekly top scorers for the men included Dave Neemeyer shooting a 278 game and Gary “Taco Technician” Slizoski put together scores of 258-268-260 for a high series of 786. Lisa McFarland took the ladies’ top score honors with a 28 while Sharon Borowiak rolled the top series with a
At Westbrook, Eric Brabec led all the men with a 290 game and a 801 series. The ladies were led by Shawna Woosley with a 268 game and a 687 series.
