Forty Rescued from Top Floors

December 27, 1992

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Forty people were rescued Sunday night after fire trapped them in the upper floors of a seven-story hotel.

Three people were hospitalized, but there were no serious injuries at the Hampton Court Hotel in Sydney’s Kings Cross district.

Several people escaped when the fire first broke out. Others fled to the roof, where they were rescued by a hydraulic platform.

Fire officials said the blaze began on the ground floor near the bar-and- grill area.

Kings Cross has a history of serious fires. Six people died in a fire at the Down Under backpackers’ hostel in September 1989. A fire at the Rembrandt hotel claimed 19 lives in August 1981, and 15 people died on Christmas Day 1975 at the Savoy.
