GAP grant: The Garrett trailhead of the Great Allegheny Passage received $14,251 for improvements as part of the Greenways Mini-Grants Program. The grant was part of a larger grant request through the Southern Alleghenies Planning & Development Commission that included $30,000 for the Johnstown Inclined Plane Riverside Park and $50,000 for the Ghost Town Trail in Cambria County. The project in Garrett will include permanent restrooms, a bike fix area and other amenities. A match is being provided by the Rails to Trails organization. Trail coordinator Brett Hollern said they decided to update the Garrett trailhead because it will be the Great Allegheny Passage’s connection to the September 11th National Memorial Trail, which is being developed. On hand for the check presentation Wednesday are Hollern, Katie St. Clair, the commission’s community development planner, and Commissioners Gerald Walker and John Vatavuk.
