Defending champ Knapp tied for 34th after first day of U.S. Senior Amateur

Defending champion Sean Knapp of Oakmont carded a 3-over 75 in his first round of the U.S. Senior Amateur on Saturday at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore., leaving him tied for 34th heading into the final day of stroke play.

Knapp posted five bogeys and two birdies in his round and sat eight strokes behind leader Greg Condon of Monte Vista, Colo.

The top 64 golfers after Sunday’s second round of stroke play will advance to the Amateur’s match play format, which begins Monday and ends with the championship Thursday.
