SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The 11th edition of the NHL’s annual New Year’s Day outdoor showcase features its fourth matchup of Original Six franchises. Today’s edition of the Winter Classic takes place at Notre Dame, where Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks take on Patrice Bergeron (pah-TREES’ BEHR’-zhehr-ahn) and the Boston Bruins.

UNDATED (AP) — New Year’s Day still means Bowl Games, and there are five of them on tap today. The action starts at noon, Eastern time, when Mississippi State meets Iowa in the Outback Bowl. At 1 p.m. Eastern, Kentucky plays Penn State and LSU faces UCF in the Fiesta Bowl. Later, Ohio State faces Washington in the 105th edition of the Rose Bowl. At night, Texas takes on Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

UNDATED (AP) — Eight NFL teams are in the market for new head coaches. Four were fired yesterday: Cincinnati’s Marvin Lewis, Denver’s Vance Joseph, Miami’s Adam Gase and Arizona’s Steve Wilks. Two others lost their jobs Sunday night: Jets coach Todd Bowles and Tampa Bay’s Dirk Koetter. They join Green Bay’s Mike McCarthy and Cleveland’s Hue Jackson, who didn’t make it to the end of the season.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Andy Murray has returned to competitive tennis for the first time since September with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Australian wildcard entry James Duckworth at the Brisbane (BRIHZ’-bihn) International. The 31-year-old Murray says he wants to try to enjoy tennis as much as he can because he’s not sure how much longer his latest return from injury will last. U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka beat Australian teenager Destanee Aiava 6-3, 6-2 to reach the women’s quarterfinals in a positive opener to her season.

PERTH, Australia (AP) — Roger Federer has won the bragging rights over fellow tennis great Serena Williams as they faced each other on court for the first time today. Federer spearheading Switzerland’s 4-2, 4-3 victory in a mixed doubles decider at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia.
