Nigeria Ship Explosion Kills 5

June 2, 2001

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) _ An explosion on a ship undergoing repairs in Nigeria’s main city has killed between five and 10 people, senior police officials said Saturday.

Fire fighters battled for several hours to contain the gasoline-fed blaze on Friday aboard the Real Progress at the Ijora fishing jetty in Lagos, the Comet newspaper reported. The daily said the number of deaths could be much higher.

Senior police officials told The Associated Press that no more than 10 people had been killed. Other reports put the number at five dead.

Nigeria has a tragic history of gasoline-fed fires, including several in recent years that killed hundreds of people. Nigeria is one of the world’s major oil producers and many of the accidents involve mishandling or blackmarket sales of the fuel in makeshift containers.
