Boos and Brews fundraiser set for Oct. 26

October 9, 2018

SCOTTSBLUFF — Tickets are on sale now for West Nebraska Arts Center’s annual fundraiser “Boos and Brews,” an adults-only Día de Los Muertos beer and margarita tasting celebration that will be held Friday, Oct. 26, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Arts Center, 106 East 18th Street in Scottsbluff.

Spend an evening in the gallery enjoying original artwork inspired by Día de Los Muertos, sample a variety of Mexican beers and margaritas from Main Street Market Wine and Spirits and 16th Empire, and enjoy great music by local band Avid Dischord. There will be a nacho bar with all the fixings. Vincent Martinez of 16th Empire will be serving and enticing appetizers as well as a special tequila surprise drink throughout the evening. Costumes are encouraged (especially Dia de los Muertos-inspired) but not required – prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. There will also be a dessert auction.

This event is sponsored by Nossaman Petitt Law Firm, Main Street Market Wine and Spirits, Bridgman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Monument Realty, 16th Empire, Flowers on Broadway, Kelley Bean Co.

Day of the Dead is a Hispanic holiday celebrated in Central and Southern Mexico and other countries throughout the world on October 31, November 1 and 2. The intent is to encourage visits by those who have passed on, so the souls will hear the prayers and the comments of the living. Celebrations can also take a humorous tone, as families remember and share funny events and anecdotes about the departed. Día de los Muertos is about celebrating life – not mourning death. A memory board and altar or “ofrenda” is also part of the Día de los Muertos exhibit where the public is invited to display items that inspire happy memories and pictures of loved ones who have passed.

“I have always loved this event, it’s a chance to wear a costume and have good food and drinks with friends plus it is a great way to support the Arts Center” said Michele Denton, executive director at WNAC.

Proceeds will help fund programming at the Arts Center including classes and workshops for adults and youth, special events, and gallery exhibits.

Tickets are limited and can be purchased through Oct. 26. The 2018 Boos and Brews fundraiser is an adults-only event. No one under the age of 21 will be admitted and I.D. will be required. Purchase tickets online at www.thewnac.com, visit the office at West Nebraska Arts Center, or call 308-632-2226. Cost is $20 for members of WNAC and $30 regular price.
