Mother charged with child abuse in death of baby girl

July 13, 2019

LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) — Both parents of a 1-year-old North Carolina girl who authorities say arrived at a hospital unresponsive and bruised have now been charged in connection with her death.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that 25-year-old Sarah Hardin of Shannon, the mother of 1-year-old Jadalyn Barton, was arrested Friday. She is charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury.

The charges come a day after Jadalyn’s father, 17-year-old Jonathan Blake Barton, was charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse in the girl’s death.

Sheriff Burnis Wilkins has described the infant’s condition as “unspeakable.”

The sheriff’s office says Hardin is being held in the Robeson County Detention Center on a $1.5 million bond. It wasn’t immediately clear if she had an attorney who could comment on her behalf.
