Liechtenstein’s Buechel Wins Schneider Cup
NOZAWA, Japan (AP) _ Marco Buechel of Liechtenstein won the men’s giant slalom Wednesday while Japan’s Noriyo Hiroi won the women’s event in the Schneider Cup, second leg of the five-meet FIS Far East Cup Japan series.
Buechel had runs of 55.70 and 55.19 seconds on the 3,005-foot Kandahar course, with a vertical drop of 1,000 feet.
He moved up to second in the giant slalom standings with 60 points to 61 for Achim Vogt of Liechtenstein. The two also hold the same positions in the overall Far East Cup standings, with Vogt leading Beuchel 77 to 68.
Buechel’s total time of 1:50.89 was 0.75 seconds faster than Hisaya Sato of Japan, who was second in 1:51.64. Sato had runs of 56.58 and 55.06.
In the women’s race, Japanese took all the top positions, with Hiroi winning with runs of 1:05.27 and 1:05.17 for a total 2:10.44. Midori Matsuda was second in 2:11.44. She had runs of 1:06.31 and 1:05.13.
The women’s Rossignol Cup slalom races were snowed out Tuesday.
The winners in the Far East Cup, European Cup and North American Cup all qualify to compete in the season’s World Cup finale in Lillehammer, Norway.
