Mother Of U.S. Rep, Senator, Dies

DETROIT (AP) _ Bess Levin, matriarch of a political family whose two sons are a U.S. senator and a congressman, died Thursday at age 87.

Mrs. Levin was the mother of Sen. Carl Levin and U.S. Rep. Sander Levin, both Democrats. She also is survived by a daughter, Hannah Gladstone of Detroit. A brother, H.Y. Levinson, is the former owner of a Detroit radio station.

Her husband, Saul R. Levin, died in 1960. He was a Detroit lawyer and member of the state Corrections Commission.

Mrs. Levin’s late brother, David Levinson, was a member of the Oakland County Board of Supervisors. Her brother-in-law, the late Theodore Levin, was Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District. Charles Levin, a nephew, is a Michigan Supreme Court justice.

Private funeral services were planned.
