Rafter Out of Davis Cup Match
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Pat Rafter will miss Australia’s Davis Cup match against Russia because of the shoulder injury that sidelined his U.S. Open tennis defense.
``Pat saw the doctor yesterday. ... He feels that Pat should take at least 6-8 weeks off,″ Davis Cup captain John Newcombe said Thursday.
``If he does come back and play Davis Cup, even in doubles, he risks further injury to the arm and it will take even longer to repair. What we’re hoping is that we can win this semifinal and Pat will be 100 percent fit for the final in early December.″
Rafter’s absence and the likelihood that Mark Philippoussis (ankle and knee) will also be missing against Russia means Lleyton Hewitt will assume the No. 1 singles position.
Wayne Arthurs, Mark Woodforde, Andrew Ilie and Jason Stoltenberg will fight for the other singles berth during a week of trials before the Sept. 24-26 match in Brisbane.
