Federal policy change spurs concerns about legal pot

January 7, 2018

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — The Trump administration’s new policy on enforcing federal marijuana laws has raised concerns within Delaware’s movement to legalize the drug for recreational use. It’s also provided ammunition for opponents to legalization.

The News Journal in Wilmington reported Thursday that both sides of the debate are reacting to the policy change announced by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. He appeared to give federal prosecutors a green light to aggressively enforce federal marijuana laws, even in states where pot is legal.

Delaware already allows the use of marijuana to treat patients suffering from certain medical conditions. Pro-marijuana state lawmakers said Sessions’ memo could lead to legal action from states. But opponents said the uncertainty wrought by the policy change is yet another reason to hold off on full legalization.
