Teens Sentenced for ‘Skinhead’ Slaying of Vietnamese Youth
HOUSTON (AP) _ Two teen-agers who shouted ″white power″ as they kicked a Vietnamese boy to death were sentenced to prison.
Derek Ian Hilla, 18, of Houston, was sentenced Thursday to 45 years in prison and Kevin Michael Allison, 18, of Baytown, received 10 years for the Aug. 9 beating death of Hung Truong, 15, of Katy.
Hilla and Allison also were fined $10,000 each.
Hilla was convicted on a murder charge Wednesday in state District Court and faced life in prison. Allison was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and received the maximum sentence for that charge.
Witnesses testified that Hilla and Allison shouted ″white power″ as they kicked and stomped Truong, who begged for his life and asked forgiveness for emigrating to the United States.
The two sported closely cropped haircuts and wore black, military-style boots associated with white-supremacist ″skinheads,″ witnesses testified. The attack occurred in the parking lot of a Houston apartment complex.
An autopsy showed Truong died of a skull fracture and Hilla was accused of delivering the fatal blow.
