Greenwood church votes to switch Presbyterian denominations
GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi church is leaving the Presbyterian Church USA to join another Presbyterian denomination that many consider more conservative.
The Rev. Rusty Douglas is pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood. He tells The Greenwood Commonwealth that members voted 249-3 on Sunday to join ECO, a Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians. It holds marriage must be only between a man and a woman.
Douglas says one primary issue was that the congregation wanted to control its property.
Previously, First Presbyterian sued St. Andrew’s Presbytery of Oxford, an overseeing body for the Presbyterian Church USA, to determine the owner of Greenwood church property. The two sides agreed in a settlement for First Presbyterian to hold a vote to determine if the majority of congregants wanted to leave for a new denomination.
