UConn women extend series with South Carolina

Doug BonjourMay 18, 2019

UConn and South Carolina will continue their rivalry beyond the upcoming season.

The Huskies have extended the series for two more years, a school spokesperson confirmed Saturday. The Gamecocks will visit Connecticut in 2020-21 and travel to Columbia the following season.

Carl Adamec of the Journal Inquirer first reported the agreement.

UConn is scheduled to visit South Carolina this season, completing a four-year deal. The Huskies have won all eight meetings with the Gamecocks, including a 97-79 victory last February in Hartford. Napheesa Collier paced the Huskies with 31 points, 16 rebounds and six assists, while fellow senior Katie Lou Samuelson added 29 points.

In addition to visiting South Carolina, the Huskies will also make trips to Dayton, DePaul, Ohio State, Seton Hall and Vanderbilt in non-conference play next season. They’re also scheduled to host defending national champion Baylor, California, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee and Virginia. The season will begin with a preseason game on Nov. 6 against Division-II Trevecca Nazarene in Storrs.

South Carolina went 23-10 (13-3 SEC) and lost to Baylor in the Sweet 16 last year. Dawn Staley is bringing in the nation’s top recruiting class this fall, featuring four players ranked in the top 11 by ESPNw: Aliyah Boston (No. 3), Zia Cooke (No. 4), Laeticia Amihere (No. 10) and Breanna Beal (No. 11).
