Saturday crash victim identified

December 24, 2018

One child was confirmed dead after a single-vehicle crash Saturday 11 miles east of Ogallala.

Killed in the crash was Karen Valverde, 11, of Longmont, Colorado.

At 4:11 p.m. MT, an eastbound Chevrolet Tahoe on Interstate 80 left the traffic lane when the driver suffered a medical emergency, a Nebraska State Patrol dispatcher said.

The Tahoe entered the median, came back into the eastbound lane and crashed into a culvert in the roadside ditch.

Four of the Tahoe’s seven occupants were ejected from the vehicle, State Patrol dispatch said on Monday. Dispatchers originally reported that two occupants were ejected.

None of the occupants was restrained, dispatch said.

It is believed the occupants of the Tahoe are relatives.

Paxton Volunteer Fire Chief Kyle Gartrell said everyone in the Tahoe was taken to the hospital, including the girl who died. He did not know the conditions of the other occupants.
