Bombs Explode in Mexico Banks

August 9, 2001

MEXICO CITY (AP) _ At least two bombs exploded and three others were defused in three Banamex bank branches in Mexico City on Wednesday night, explosions that media reports attributed to a revolutionary group.

Some windows were broken but no serious damages or injuries were reported.

TV Azteca reported that individuals identifying themselves as members of a group called the People’s Revolutionary Armed Forces claimed responsibility in calls to the television station and to Mexican newspapers.

The explosions happened at branches of the Mexican bank Banamex. The callers also said they had placed explosives at the Italian Embassy in Mexico City and at the federal Senate building, TV Azteca reported.

Mexico City police officials told The Associated Press they had no additional information.
