Report: Carruth Mulled Attack
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ Rae Carruth told a family friend he didn’t kill his pregnant girlfriend but thought about having her attacked early in her pregnancy, The Charlotte Observer reported Sunday.
The friend, Wendy Lovette Cole, drove the car in which the former NFL player left Charlotte after learning Cherica Adams died Dec. 14 of gunshot wounds from a month earlier.
Carruth was discovered the next day in the trunk of Cole’s car, which was parked outside a motel in Wildersville, Tenn.
Cole spoke to investigators Jan. 12. The Observer said it obtained a copy of the 79-page transcript. She was charged in August with harboring a fugitive.
Cole said Carruth told her he prayed for Adams to survive and that Adams was the only person who could prove he didn’t shoot her.
But Cole told police the former Carolina Panthers player told her he thought about having Adams beaten. The player, she added, was upset that Adams was bragging that she was pregnant by Carruth.
Carruth has said he is innocent. Defense attorneys say Adams was shot after making an obscene gesture at the alleged gunman, Van Brett Watkins.
Watkins pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is expected to testify against Carruth. Two other men are charged in the slaying, which prosecutors contend Carruth masterminded to keep from paying child support.
Carruth’s capital murder trial enters its third week of jury selection on Monday. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
Carruth’s lead attorney, David Rudolf, said Sunday he had no comment on the Observer’s story and would not say if he planned to call Cole as a defense witness.
Prosecutor Gentry Caudill did not immediately return a call.
During her interview, Cole said Carruth told her Adams pressured him for money after becoming pregnant and boasted about never having to work as a topless dancer again.
Cole also said Carruth told her he wasn’t involved in Adams’ Nov. 16 shooting and that he discussed staying involved with her for the sake of their expected child. Carruth has a 6-year-old son in California from a previous relationship.
Adams’ baby, Chancellor, was delivered before she died and is in the custody of her family.
