Poem: Red hat

May 7, 2019

For Trudy Nelson

I have a shiny red hat

not really a hat but it’s raining

and it’s plastic in a shape

I can’t make out and missing its lid

and left over from Christmas

or Valentine’s Day

bottom says it came from China

but Trudy gave it to me, thought

I could make some use of it

what with my big dog and jungle

of indoor plants, it ought to be

good for something

so after I said my good-byes

and entertained her few last words

of dismay over being cooped up inside

I stepped out the main entrance

of senior assisted living

into a sudden deluge, no

raincoat or hood or umbrella …

thank you Trudy for inducting me

into your red hat society

(it has already come in handy.)
