Jets’ Elliott Arrested for DWI
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) _ New York Jets offensive tackle Jumbo Elliott has been charged with driving while intoxicated.
Elliott, 33, was stopped at about 5 a.m. Sunday while driving his 1996 Mercedes Benz westbound on the Long Island Expressway, said Nassau County Police Lt. Kevin Caslin.
In addition to the driving while intoxicated charge _ a misdemeanor _ Elliott was charged with speeding, failure to signal and making an unsafe lane change.
Caslin would not say whether Elliott failed a breathalyzer or a field sobriety test.
Elliott was arraigned later Sunday and released on his own recognizance, Caslin said. He is due back in District Court in Hempstead on Sept. 8.
Elliott is in his 11th season in the National Football League.
The Jets, who practice at Hofstra University in Hempstead, refused Monday to comment on Elliott’s arrest and did not make him available for comment.
