Helen Violet Leys
Helen Violet Leys, 96, of Watertown, quietly passed away on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown. Burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Friends and family may visit preceding the funeral service. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Helen was born on July 29, 1922, in Brantwood, and was the daughter of the late Axel and Hilda (nee Niemi) Halkola. She married Wilbert Leys on June 4, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois.
Helen moved from Brantwood to Chicago upon graduating from high school, where she worked for Motorola in its accounting department. She later used these skills in preparing tax returns in the Watertown area.
Upon moving to Watertown in 1955 and giving birth to their children, Helen devoted her life to raising them and creating a loving home. Helen taught her children the importance of family. Her children’s favorite and most vivid memories of their mom are of her love for them and how she showed this love in both the small and large things she did and said. When Helen became a grandmother, she cherished being able to help raise a new generation. Helen shared her life with children in the community as a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader and, later in life, as a kindergarten volunteer at Schurz Elementary School.
Helen was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Watertown and was active in church life.
Helen’s survivors include her children: Kathy Kempke, Sue (John) Murack, Randy (Mary) Leys and Jeff Leys; her grandchildren: Patrick (Chantal), Mark (Kelsey) and Steve (Alyssa) Murack, Megan, Katie and Becca Leys; and her great-grandchildren: Jaxton and Eliza Murack. Helen is also survived by two sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Helen will be welcomed into her new life by her parents, her husband and her two sisters (Hazel and Lila), as well as other close friends and relatives.
