UN Looks into Use of Annan’s Image

July 9, 1999

UNITED NATIONS (AP) _ The U.N. legal office, which spends its days considering complex matters of international law, has turned its attention to the New York city transit pass.

The issue concerns an advertisement on the back of the MetroCard that features a picture of U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the phrase ``Got time for a Kofi break?″

The ad is for ABC.com, the Web site of the news network.

U.N. spokesman Manoel de Almeida e Silva said Thursday that ABC.com hadn’t asked for or received U.N. authorization to use Annan’s name or photograph for the ad.

``In as much as this may raise some legal issues, the legal office is looking into the matter,″ he told reporters.

A spokesman for ABC parent Disney’s online group, Eric Handler, said he couldn’t comment because he hadn’t received any direct complaint from the United Nations.

Similar ads feature Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Attorney General Janet Reno.
