Russian Choral Group Lyra To Perform At W-B Church

WILKES-BARRE — One local church is welcoming those from both near and far with one of its most recent events — some from as far away as St. Petersburg, Russia. St. Mary of Assumption Byzantine Catholic Church will host a concert and dinner at 695 N. Main St. featuring Lyra, a choral group from St. Petersburg, on Tuesday. This will be Lyra’s first time performing at St. Mary’s, though they have been performing in the U.S. for well over 20 years. The Rev. Michael Kerestes, the pastor at St. Mary’s, has been watching them perform for just as long. “Their tour is like a road map of the Northeast area,” Kerestes said. “They follow along I-95 and make stops along the way. Churches invite them when they see their advertisements. It doesn’t usually matter what religion. They’re interested in the music.” Lyra is mostly made up of students or graduates of St. Peterburg Conservatoire, working in different choirs in St. Petersburg. Their main goal is exploring and popularizing Russian style choir music, and their repertoire includes Russian sacred music, traditional folk songs, secular songs of Russian classics, and songs from operas composed by Russian and foreign composers. While the choir community that makes up Lyra includes about 25 people, they usually tour in groups of five or six people due to the complexities of travel. Preceding the concert, the church will be holding a chicken paprikas dinner. Chicken paprikas is a traditional Hungarian dish known most for its heavy paprika seasoning. The dinner will begin at 4 p.m. and requires tickets purchased in advance. Adults are $10 and children 12 and under are $8. Tickets can be purchased by calling 570-822-6028. The concert will follow at 6 p.m. When asked about what he hopes will come from the dinner and concert, Kerestes had hope that it might draw in new faces. “It’s just sort of a little outreach to the community. Maybe because we’re a little different than most Catholic churches, people might want to stop in,” he said. For more on Lyra, visit http://www.facebook.com/lyra.usa or http://www.lyra-singers.com.
