HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP Greenwich Academy volleyball team tops St. Luke’s
Fresh off a spirited in against rival King School, the Greenwich Academy volleyball team topped visiting St. Luke’s School, 3-1, in an FAA match.
The Gators, who dealt King its first FAA loss since 2013 on Friday, won Monday’s match by set scores of 26-9, 19-25, 25-12, 25-7.
Evie Kay Girard recorded 10 kills and six aces, while Grace Ryan had seven kills and eight aces to pace GA. Alexandra Trofort had six kills and five aces for Greenwich Academy, which ran its record to 6-0.
Valeska Lasky added 29 assists, five digs and four aces for the Gators, who host Hotchkiss on Saturday at 1 p.m.
“We struggled a bit with our serving and that’s what got us behind in Game 2,” Girard said. “But we recovered and got back into it in the third game. Our team is looking really strong.”
SACRED HEART SOCCER
Isabel Devita tallied twice, Lara Patricio registered one goal and one assist and Amelia Sheehan had two assists in the Sacred Heart Greenwich’s 4-0 road win over Hamden Hall Country Day School on Monday.
With their second straight victory, the Tigers upped their mark to 6-3. DeVita put the Tigers on top, 1-0, scoring off a cross from Sheehan in the 23rd minute. Fernanda Serna made it 2-0, tallying off a pass from Taylor O’Meara in the 29th minute.
DeVita’s second goal came in the 49th minute. Patricio assisted on the goal. In the 56th minute, Patricio’s goal gave Sacred Heart a 4-0 advantage. Athena Corroon made four saves in the winning effort.
“We had the ball a lot and created chances from the beginning,” Tigers coach Stuart Smith said.
Sacred Heart visits St. Luke’s on Friday.
Brunswick’s varsity eight boat made a strong showing at the Head of the Riverfront Regatta on Saturday, finishig third out of 33 entries in the event held in Hartford.
The Bruins finished the 2.25-mile upstream route on the Connecticut River in a time of 17:56.76, less than two seconds from a second-place finish.
Brunswick’s third-place varsity eight boat included Christopher Bass (bow), Nick Dow (two seat), TJ Lewis (three seat), Daniel Augustine (four seat), Hank Michalik (five), Scott Gibbons (six), Ryan Connolly (seven), Tommy Kimberlin (stroke) and Matthew Pillari (coxswain)
Brunswick’s next race is the Head of the Housatonic Regatta, which takes place in Shelton on Saturday.
SACRED HEART CREW
Sacred Heart competed in the Head of the Riverfront Regatta in Hartford over the weekend. In the varsity 8 race, the Tigers placed 13th out of 25 boats. According to Sacred Heart coach Costel Mutescu, the varsity 8 boat raced a solid 32 strokes a minute and finished ahead of schools such as Middletown, Farmington and Stonington.
The Tigers also competed in the regatta’s varsity 4 race, finishing ahead of Miss Porter’s School.
