Lottery drawing delayed due to chemical spill at building

February 12, 2019

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — People hoping to find out if they struck it rich in the North Carolina Education Lottery had to wait a little longer because of a chemical spill at the lottery building.

Local news outlets report lottery spokesman Van Denton says first responders were called to lottery headquarters Monday night after about three gallons (11 liters) of peroxide leaked from a 35-gallon (132-liter) drum.

Officials said a chemical reaction caused the plastic drum to tip over in a second-floor mechanical room. The peroxide is used to treat water in the building’s air conditioning system.

The spill set off an alarm. Approximately 10 people were in the building when the spill occurred and they were evacuated. No one was hurt.

Monday 11 p.m. drawing was delayed to Tuesday morning.
