IRVINE, Calif. (AP) _ Shaun Battle scored a career-high 27 points as UC Irvine defeated San Jose State 78-70 Thursday night.
Battle, a senior forward, was 11 of 14 from the floor as he eclipsed his previous high of 15 points.
Irvine (5-4) is 2-0 in the Big West Conference for the first time since the 1985-86 season. The Anteaters have won six of their last eight games against the Spartans.
Kevin Simmons added 16 points and Paul Foster 14 for Irvine, which hit just 15 of 35 free throws, including five of 18 in the second half.
Irvine led 48-35 at halftime and built a 63-42 lead with 14:37 remaining. San Jose State (2-8, 1-1) whittled its deficit to 67-64 with 5:23 to play, but never came closer.
Sam Allen led the Spartans with 15 points and Darren Greene added 14.
