Paris-St. Germain Opens With Win

Paris-St. Germain started its defense of the European Cup Winners Cup Thursday with a 4-0 rout of Vaduz in Liechtenstein.

Paul Le Guen put the French team ahead after 12 minutes, Julio Dely Valdes scored in the 41st minute and Leonardo connected four minutes later.

The amateurs of Vaduz, including gardeners, postal workers and mechanics from the capital of the tiny principality, managed to restrict the titlist to one goal by Bernard Allou in the second half.

Ronaldo scored twice as Barcelona beat AEK Larnaca of Cyprus 2-0.

Benfica of Lisbon routed Ruch Chorzow of Poland 5-1 with Brazilian midfielder Valdo Filho scoring twice. Osmar Donizete, Joao Pinto and Jamir Gomes got one goal each, while Dariusz Gesior scored for the Polish team.

Gabriel Batistuta scored in the second half to give Italy’s Fiorentina a 1-1 tie at Romania’s FC Gloria Bistrita. Ilie Lazar scored for the home team on a 40-yard breakaway after only three minutes.

Georgia’s Dynamo Batumi stunned PSV Eindhoven when Amiran Mujiri scored in the 21st minute. Luc Nilis scored with six minutes left in the first half for a 1-1 tie.

Uwe Wegmann connected on a header in the 59th minute to give Kaiserslautern a 1-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade.

Inge Bjornebye scored in the 61st minute to give Liverpool a 1-0 victory at Finland’s MyPa.
