Main Figures in Israel-Hezbollah Swap
Key people in the prisoner exchange between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah:
_ Elhanan Tannenbaum: An Israeli businessman, Tannenbaum was kidnapped by Hezbollah from an Arab country in October 2000 while taking part in a questionable business deal. He has been held in Lebanon ever since. He is likely to be questioned by Israeli police.
_ Beny Avraham, Adi Avitan and Omar Souad: Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah in October 2000 and presumed dead. Their bodies are to be returned to Israel.
_ Sheik Abdel Karim Obeid: A Lebanese guerrilla leader, he was kidnapped by Israeli forces in Lebanon in 1989 to be used as a bargaining chip in hopes of securing the release of Israeli airman Ron Arad, who was shot down over Lebanon in 1986.
_ Mustafa Dirani: Another Lebanese guerrilla leader, Dirani was kidnapped by Israeli forces from Lebanon in 1994, also in hopes of bargaining for Arad. Arad’s family and supporters have opposed his release. Dirani says he was tortured during captivity and is suing the Israeli government.
_ Steven Smyrek: A German citizen, he has been imprisoned in Israel since 1997 for membership in Hezbollah. He is expected to be questioned by security officials when he returns to Germany.
