Correction: Calista-Lawsuit story

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — In a story July 9 about a lawsuit filed by a Colorado woman against an Alaska Native corporation, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the corporation, Calista Corp., is based in Bethel, Alaska. It is headquartered in Anchorage, and serves the region that includes Bethel.

A Colorado woman is suing an Alaska Native corporation, its top executive and a former company official, claiming her complaints about sexual harassment by the ex-official were mishandled

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A Colorado woman is suing an Alaska Native corporation, its top executive and a former company official, claiming her complaints about sexual harassment by the ex-official were mishandled.

The civil lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Larimer County District Court in Colorado, the Anchorage Daily News reported . The suit also alleges the woman was subjected to retaliation for reporting inappropriate behavior.

The woman is not being named because the newspaper generally does not identify victims of sexual harassment or sexual assault.

Walter Feather, an attorney for Anchorage-based Calista Corp. and chief executive Andrew Guy, says the allegations are without merit and that the corporation “intends to vigorously defend against them.” The corporation serves the region that includes Bethel, Alaska.

The former Calista official, George Owletuck, was terminated from the corporation last year following an internal investigation that found evidence he violated sexual harassment policies. The lawsuit states Owletuck is believed to be living in Ecuador.

The lawsuit also alleges Guy tried to cover up Owletuck’s behavior. It also claims Calista retaliated by rejecting her business proposal.

The woman, who encountered Owletuck about a proposal to sell her company, said Owletuck sent her flowers, a love letter and lingerie. According to the lawsuit, the woman told Owletuck his behavior was inappropriate.

The woman is seeking damages that include the value of the rejected business deal.

Calista has denied that Guy, the chief executive, mishandled the sexual harassment complaint. The company also says the woman had not told Guy she was harassed.
