Extending Backpack Buddies assistance through the holidays
The following is a synopsis of the Putnam County Rotary meeting of May 14:
To the casual traveler on the interstate, the houses along the I-64 corridor give an illusion of prosperity. But Doug Erwin reminded Putnam Rotarians this morning that many children are hungry, especially when there is no school and there are no school meals.
Nearly a thousand children in the county schools come from homes that qualify for free-or reduced-cost meals, Erwin said. And when school is out, the meals are often erratic or the table is bare.
After a weekend or a holiday, a teacher told him, you can see the hunger in the eyes of the children on the first day back.
